NH / ME climate, -13°F+ operation needed

Dual-fuel: keep the gas furnace as backup
Drops into your existing coil and air handler. Best 25%–120% variable-speed modulation means it runs efficiently at shoulder-season temps (40–55°F) where most heating hours occur. Gas furnace stages in automatically below ~5°F.
Mass Save rebate required (MA)
Both the ductless Fujitsu XLTH (R-32) and Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat H2i (R-454B) qualify for the 2026 Mass Save Heat Pump QPL. The ducted Bosch IDS 2.0 (R-410A) was removed from the QPL — pick Bosch's ductless Climate 5000 (R-454B) if you want a qualifying Bosch. Fujitsu pairs QPL eligibility with the widest cold range at the lowest price.
Quietest outdoor unit (near bedroom window)
The Fujitsu XLTH outdoor unit runs 49 dB — the quietest here — with the Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat close behind at 51 dB. The Bosch IDS 2.0 at 56 dB is noticeably louder, comparable to a typical central-AC condenser.
Best efficiency on shoulder season (40–55°F)
The IDS 2.0's 25%–120% modulation range lets it run at very low capacity during mild days, avoiding the efficiency-robbing on/off cycling of older two-stage systems — and mild shoulder-season hours are where most of the annual heating load actually sits.
Whole-home single-unit ducted replacement
The Bosch IDS 2.0 is purpose-built for ducted replacement of a central furnace system (2–5 ton, 24K–60K BTU). Fujitsu's ARG air handler series offers a ductless-origin alternative with better Mass Save eligibility. Mitsubishi's PAH/SVZ air handlers also work but are less commonly available in the 2–5 ton ducted-replacement segment.
Mass Save QPL status reflects 2026 refrigerant rules. Other states (NHSaves, Energize CT, RI Commerce Corp, Efficiency Vermont) have separate QPL lists — eligibility may differ. Always verify current QPL listings at masssave.com or your state program before purchase.

Halcyon XLTH
Single-zone H2i wall mounts install in 4–6 hours. Multi-zone MXZ-SM36 Hyper-Heat systems take 1–2 days depending on interior chase complexity. We keep line sets under 75 ft to maintain rated efficiency. Every outdoor unit goes on a concrete pad with vibration-isolation feet — never wall-bracketed or elevated. The modular refrigerant circuit makes adding indoor units later straightforward.
The IDS 2.0 replaces the split-system outdoor condenser and indoor air coil — the existing air handler typically stays. We measure duct static pressure before installation; oversized ducts sometimes need balancing dampers. Outdoor unit is placed on a concrete pad, north or east exposure preferred, clear of prevailing wind. For dual-fuel setups we leave the gas furnace as secondary heat, letting the heat pump carry the full load until its efficiency floor (~5°F) and the furnace handles the balance.
The XLTH ships with a pre-charged factory line set for runs under 25 ft, which speeds up single-zone installations. We route line sets through the rim joist on older New England homes where there's no interior chase. R-32 requires full EPA-608 Universal certification for any field work — all NuWatt technicians carry Universal. The outdoor unit is the most compact of the three reviewed here, which helps on tight lots. Concrete pad install only, same as Mitsubishi — never wall-bracket or elevated-mount.
